Overview

A Cosmelan® peel reduces and eliminates acquired skin blemishes of melanic origin, increasing skin luminosity and equalising skin tone

Cosmelan® is the leading depigmentation treatment in the world that treats all types of pigmentation.

Cosmelan® peel differs from other skin brightening chemical peels in its ingredients, it goes after abnormality. It is designed to treat the specific symptoms of Melasma. Cosmelan® treatments can improve the appearance of:

·        Lentigo, Freckles or Nevus

·        Pregnancy Mask / Melasma

·        Pigmentation

·        Chloasma from UV damage

·        Birthmarks

·        Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation - PIH (from acne / scars)

What types of pigmentation can be treated:

All types of pigmentation and skin colour can be effectively treated with the Cosmelan Depigmentation Peel, including hormonal pigmentation such as Melasma.

How does it work?

Action Mechanism:

Cosmelan® aims to reduce and eliminate skin blemishes of melanic origin.

Application of Cosmelan inhibits the melanogenesis process paralysing melanin production for a long period of time during which corneum stratum flaking plus the action of the macrophagic cells take the melanin deposits with them.

Inhibitor action without damaging the melanocyte

Under no circumstances does tyrosinase inhibition cause the melanocytes to disappear; instead, it simply paralyses or stops melanin production, without risk of white blemishes appearing. Cosmelan action causes complementary inhibition of other enzymes involved in the eumelanin production process, like dopa tautomerase, among others.

Reversible inhibition of tyrosinase activity

Inhibition of the tyrosinase is only activated during treatment application. When finished, the enzyme recovers its activity by producing new melanin, particularly in response to solar stimulus. Due to this, application of topical depigmentants must be repetitive to obtain results.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a pigment disorder of the cells resulting in dark patches on the face, often with distinct edges. Melasma can occur in both men and women, and can often be seen on the cheekbones, forehead, nose and upper lip but can develop in other areas of the face.

There are a number of factors that can trigger Melasma including:

Hormones: External hormones such as birth control pills and Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) or pregnancy can bring on Melasma. When Melasma occurs during pregnancy it is known as the “pregnancy mask”.

Thyroid disease: The incidence of Melasma also increases in patients with thyroid disease.

Sun Exposure: UV exposure is the leading cause of Melasma Hyperpigmentation and the patches tend appear darker in the summer months.

Melasma has long been one of the toughest skin conditions to treat because discoloration lies so deep within the skin's layers and is hard for medications to target.

Does the procedure hurt?

The procedure itself is not painful, however your skin will feel hot, tingly and uncomfortable following treatment and each time you apply the homecare treatment. You will also experience skin peeling during the homecare period

How long will it take to see the results?

The most significant change will likely take place a few weeks after your in-clinic application of the mask.

However, this can give a misleading feeling of success, as it is important to continue with the at-home treatment as indicated by the professional, as this is the second phase of the cosmelan method.

Does it work on all skin types?

Yes, Cosmelan treatment is suitable for all skin types and tones.

Is it safe?

The treatment has been formulated to be completely safe for you and your skin

Is there any downtime?

There is sufficient downtime involved with this treatment. After effects include skin peeling, redness, swelling, dryness and discomfort during the homecare regime. We will however be on hand to help you through the process and keep reviewing your progress.
